Building an Employable Personal Brand On Social Media

Anybody who uses the internet regularly has a digital footprint – but not everybody knows what that is. Luckily, The Internet Society put together a nice definition: 

“Your digital footprint is all the stuff you leave behind as you use the Internet. Comments on social media, Skype calls, app use and email records – it’s part of your online history and can potentially be seen by other people, or tracked in a database.”

With a whopping 70% of employers checking social media before hiring, it’s important that your online persona reflects your values and your skills. If you want to use social media as a tool to help you secure your dream job, you’ll need to put some effort into refining your personal brand. 

It takes a bit of work, but can lend you greater credibility, lead to job opportunities, and help you build a network of valuable connections in the industry you’re hoping to join.

The first thing you’ll need to do is figure out what your brand is. These days, everybody is a brand – whether they intend to be or not. Your values, your ideas, the pictures of you that exist online. These all serve to build your brand. Social media is one of the most powerful tools for managing your brand, but you need to keep on top of it, or you might end up sending entirely the wrong message.  

Find Your Brand

What do you do well? Make a list of up to three areas of expertise. What are you good at? What are you passionate about? What will you still be interested in a year from now? Make this the foundation of your bio on all platforms, letting people know who you are, and what you’re all about. These interests and skills will also work as keywords, helping you pop up in the right places when recruiters are searching.

Be Consistent

Once you’ve decided what your brand values are, it’s all about creating consistency; in the way you look, in the way you sound. Keeping the same name and profile picture across all of your social platforms is easy – but maintaining a consistent tone is a little more difficult. There’s little point in having a squeaky clean LinkedIn profile when your tweets are filthy. It’s sensible to have an account on the top social media platforms – Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, just remember to always put your best self forward, and never post anything that might get you in trouble. 

Join the Conversation

Bearing your areas of expertise in mind, think about the content you should be sharing if you want to make a good impression. Every industry has different expectations, so if you’re not sure how to approach this, do a bit of research. Learn how the leaders in your industry are using their social media platform, and find ways to emulate them. Maybe they’re offering insight into their creative process, or sharing interesting articles from other industry leaders. Get involved, and you’ll find your network quickly grows.
